A great idea and one that is probably more cost effective than you might think is to go away for the freezing winter months. Fine, however, have you considered what may happen to the house once your feet are on the warm sands. The old routine was to cancel the milk and papers and turn everything off. Nowadays a lot of well informed people are taking a few more precautions, but if you are unsure it may be a good idea to pay a professional to do it for you like Hornsey Plumbers.

Precautions:
Shut off the main water supply valve to the property, or contact your water company to advise how to turn off the service to the house (if required)

Beginning with the upstairs, open all taps, and then downstairs including the outside.

As soon as the water has stopped flowing from the taps, open the plug at the main shutoff valve if possible and let it drain.

Isolate the electrical power and/or gas to the water heater and open its drain valve.

Remove the clean out plugs on all sink traps or remove the traps, if you want.

When empty, replace them and fill with some plumbing antifreeze mixed with water in the proportions specified.

Do not put any antifreeze inside a dishwasher or clothes washing machines.

If your home has a basement drain or a main trap, fill each one with full-strength antifreeze.

As stated earlier if you do not have the time, confidence or are just confused by your systems, then seek professional help for a recognised company who employ tradesmen like a Hornsey Plumber who is fully trained in all plumbing issues.
