There is no mystic force at work, to deliver your water supply. The supply itself is fed to your home from your regional water supplier or authority. The water that they supply must comply with their own rules and regulations regarding cleanliness and purity. The water that is supplied is said to be ‘Potable’ (not portable!). The word potable is a Latin word that means ‘drinkable’ so they take it very seriously. This water is filtered, chlorinated and dosed with fluoride (which reduces the decay of human teeth). Mains systems called Trunk systems are fed underground and fed more local mains supplies. Hornsey Plumbers understand how these systems work. Your mains supply is down at a depth to make sure that there is no affects from traffic or very cold weather. This pipework was at one time asbestos cement or cast iron in construction, however today it is plastic. You will see these pies now and again when new ones are being laid. An isolating valve connects the various services which means that they can be isolated locally, meaning a supply to a new house can be made without affecting any other buildings or homes. The water pipe is fed underground from the isolating valve to the property’s boundary, where an outside stop valve is used. A chamber (or vertical pipe) is fitted so that the valve can be accessed for service or maintenance. This chamber should have markings. After the stop valve the supply continues towards the property and is called the service pipe (made from medium density polyethylene or MDPE), for which the homeowner is responsible. This (service) pipe passes under the house and in via a water meter either just outside or inside. The pipe must be insulated at all points that are exposed. A Hornsey Plumber has all the knowledge and skill to work on this system. “
